Yoga Pilates Mat Tote

How To Make Your Own Yoga Pilates Mat Tote Bag

If you are always on the move, or are a frequent traveler, then a yoga pilates mat tote bag is just what you need. It keeps your mat clean, and neatly rolled away so it's no trouble to pack into a suit case or to carry about when you are downtown.

But, rather than buying a yoga mat bag – why not make your own? Many people do, it's simple. Just use these easy to follow instructions and within a couple of hours you could have your very own, one of a kind, yoga pilates mat tote bag in just five easy steps.

Step 1. Measure your mat

Roll your mat up as you would normally, and measure the longest dimension. Add a further 3 inches to this measurement to allow for the drawstring. Then measure the circumference of your mat when rolled. You should add an additional 1 inch all round for the seams. Cut a strap that is the length of the rolled mat and about 6 inches wide.

Step 2. Choose your fabric

It could be a fabric remnant, an old drape, dress or shirt – just so long as there is enough material! See Step 1 for how to measure your bag and fabric. Remember to select a fabric that is durable and washable.

Step 3. Cut your fabric

Cut out the two pieces of fabric. You should end up with one long rectangular shaped piece and one circular piece.

Step 4. Make the strap

Fold the strap in half lengthways, right sides facing together and sew along the long edge. Turn the right way out.

Step 5. Construct your bag

Begin by hemming one of the shorter ends of the larger piece of fabric – but leave the ends open so you can thread the drawstring through. Sew the ends of the strap to one of the longer sides of the main fabric piece. Then sew the two long edges together to form a tube. The handle should now be in its final position. Then take the circular piece of fabric and snip around the edges to a depth of 3/4 of an inch. Pin the bottom of the tube (the end without the hem) to the circular base (snipping deeper if necessary) and sew together. Thread the drawstring through the hem at the top – and you've finished.

- To make the bag stronger and more durable, you can also cut out a lining and sew this to your fabric before you construct your bag.

- You can neaten the hems and edges by using the overlocker attachment on your sewing machine.

See how easy that was? And you can customize your bag with pockets and embroidery to make it really stand out! Making yourself a yoga pilates mat tote bag really couldn't be any easier.
